Do anybody know what (GRE) score is wanted from USA universities to apply for a master degree in public health
I have been nominated for a fulbright scholarship to obtain a master degree in public health , I have been asked to take both the GRE and the TOEFL exam , they told me that i need a minimum of 80 for the new IBT TOEFL but I still dont know what is the average GRE score wanted ?

It can vary widely depending on the school you want to attend. Check with the schools you are considering and they can provide an "average" GRE score for admitted graduate students.

most one year MPH programs are offered only to students who are current undergraduates at that particular school. for example, since i go to cornell, i can apply to do a MPH through my school and start the requirements as a senior and therefore only stay another year. see if your current school has this or has one with a school nearby.

What about a Masters in Health Administration
What about a Masters in Health Administration?
I am a college Junior with a 3.0 GPA (about), have decent GRE scores, and recomendations should be no problem. Another big factor is that when I get my bachelors degree I will be commisioned a medical service officer in the Army Reserve (essentially running Army hospitals). How are my chances for admission to either a MHA or Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Health Management? How competitive are the programs? I'm talking about public universities. Thanks.

I want to do my master's in Public Health, but not quite sure how difficult it might be, since I've no any medical knowlegde background. Would appreciate any suggestions!

Public Health programs don't necessarily expect you to have a medical background, although you will increase your chances of acceptance if you get some experience volunteering or working in the medical field. I suggest that you volunteer at a hospital, homeless shelter, or Ronald McDonald House. Even an animal shelter is a great place to volunteer since a major area in health care right now involves the interaction between animal and human health and disease. In the MA program, you will take classes for like statistics, epidemiology, global health, research methods, etc, to give you a solid understanding of public health care. You can also advance further to get a doctorate in public health.

Master's in Public Health...?
I was inquiring about a Master's in Public Health...what exactly could I do with such a degree, I have researched online and still don't have a clue as to exactly what this is...What careers could I pursue directly after graduating...to make $$ directly after graduating?... Please tell me what is this area and what could I do in it?...I need to move quickly to meet deadlines, please help me comprehend.

Unless you have another degree in health care with a degree in public health, it'll be very hard for you to find a job. There are very limited jobs in public health, and so, they are very selective.

There are so many jobs that you can get with a MPH in a variety of areas. Depending on what concentration you decide (epidemiology, health promotion/behavioral science, biostats, environmental, management/policy) there are differences in income after graduation. Biostatistics is probably the concentration the fewest people choose and therefore you can make a decent amount of money as a statistician following graduation. Epidemiology is also another good field. In epi, you can work for the goverment (CDC) or corporate companies. Health promotion and behavioral sciences focuses on prevention, intervention, and changing people's behaviors to promote health. Personally, in my research I've found that these HPBS jobs are a little lower paying when you only have an MPH. For the environmental concentration, you can work in health policy with the govt or other advocacy groups. In the management and administration concentration, you can work as a hospital administrator and work on how to make health systems run efficiently. In general, with a MPH, there are a lot of very different jobs. The way I went about researching possible jobs was to look at a job site (check link below). I think with an MPH, you need to remember that you're not in it for the money, but more for what you can do for other people. However, you can live and find a job, with an MPH. If you do decide to go for an MPH, make sure to pick a concentration that you will enjoy and are interested in. Good luck!

I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist. I have a MPH from USC (So Cal, not South Carolina). When I was studying public health, I chose to specialize in epidemiology and biostatistics. This is a specialty offered by most graduate programs in public health. I investigate disease outbreaks and run disease surveillance. My areas of research are parasites and enteric diseases. This involved a lot of statistics and interviewing people over the phone. In my office we also have health educators, medical epidemiologists (MDs who got additional eduction in public health) and public health nurses. My colleagues work in a variety of fields. Some do research at various universities. Some work in biotech. Some work in public health policy for local and federal government agencies. Some work for health care agencies like Kaiser Permanente. And others abandoned ship and do things unrelated to public health.

What are the career options availale with a Masters degree in Public Health and Social Welfare?
I would like to become a community health educator but at the same time I'd like to get involved in other humanitarian work such as helping the poor etc. How do I combine these two areas and look for a career that would involve both.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple of areas. One would be to work with your state's Food Bank network; besides distributing food to shelters and pantries, some Food Banks do work with other agencies to educate those living in poverty about health and proper nutrition. Food bank staff often conduct workshops, teach cooking classes, and sit on Hunger & Poverty task forces. A refugee center might be another area; in our community, the Episcopal Church runs a refugee center along with educational programs (including health and wellness issues). Additionally, The Salvation Army, Catholic and Episcopal churches run shelters, homes for unwed mothers, and transitional housing shelters; skilled administrators are often needed at these types of facilities. You could choose to become a paid lobbyist; and advocate for social change at a legislative level. I've recently become involved in advocacy and was rather surprised to learn about the whole lobbying process. You can always choose a day job in community health, and then volunteer your time and experience at charitable organizations that assist the poor. With the sort of educational background you would have, you'd be an incredible asset.

I am a undergrad at a school with a pretty good pre-med program. I want to be a doctor, but I'm thinking of taking a year off before going to med school because, in the major that I am in, I only need an additional semester to get my masters in public health. Is it worth it? Why do so many doctors go back to school to get their MPH? What are the benefits other than gaining more knowledge of the health care system? Namely, what are the tangible benefits?

The MPH is simply a different qualification which acts as an entry pathway into other aspects of the healthcare system. Being a doctor teaches you about health and illness in terms of the body and its mechanics: an MPH focuses on entirely different aspects of health care. You can choose epidemiology, health economics, health policy, health administration and so on: these options can lead you into administration or government policy advisingt or similar jobs, which you aren't always qualified for as a doctor. Or, you can use your MPH to study things like primary health care, health care in resource poor settings, medical sociology/anthropology and so on, and these are likely to assist you if you want to do aid work, or work with culturally diverse communities, etc. The benefit of doing an mph may not immediately be financial, but you will have a far greater skills base than with only a medical degree.

I saw your vote for the last answer, looked at your profile, and couldn't help myself to join the answers for this question :-P As for the things that you can do with an MPH, well, there are many :-) Since MPH is a professional-oriented degree in public health, your career choice will be rather broad, but will also depend on the sub-specialty of your choice. Usually, for entry-level jobs as a fresh graduate, you can become a program officer or a coordinator at a local or state public health agency. It will also be possible for you to work in academia as a researcher, helping to design questionnaires and perform statistical analysis. I'm doing an MS but I wish I had chosen an MPH in the first place cuz the MS thesis + publication requirement at my school just takes forever to complete (I'm overseas so it may be different in the States). Please keep in mind that if you want to apply for a Ph.D. and try for an academic career, it may be a bit (just a bit) easier to do so with an MSPH (Master of Science in Public Health) than an MPH. I wouldn't recommend an MSPH otherwise. If you're a US citizen, then there are plenty of opportunities at the CDC, the armed forces (if u major in Envi Health or Health Admin) and the US Public Health Service's Commission Corps as well.

Should I study Public Health in undergrad level
Should I study Public Health in undergrad level?
I'm from bangladesh and i have been accepted at temple university where i want to study public health at the undergraduate level. Then later on i wanna do masters in public health. So i wanted to know whether it would be wise to study public health at undergraduate level because some people say that its better to do major in a different subject and then do masters in public health. Also by studying PH at undergrad do people get jobs? I'm really confused cuz i really wanna study this subject. Someone plz help me!!

In the US, it is hard to get a public health job without the masters degree. Undergrad public health is fine, but really, you should broaden your horizons and save the public health studies for graduate school. I studied molecular cell biology as an undergraduate. Then I earned my MPH in epidemiology and biostatistics. Perhaps you should consider some other biomedical field for udergrad? Microbiology is great if you want to do pulib health lab work (infectious diseases and so forth). Or maybe something in public policy so you can learn about legal and civic applications of public health.

Quiet person interested in the Public Health field
Quiet person interested in the Public Health field?
Are there any jobs in Public Health where I can work "behind the scenes?" I'm a very quiet person, I don't like doing presentations and talking in front of people. I want to get my Masters in Public Health, because I want to prevent disease and promote overall good heath in communities and society. Anything I can do in Public Health that doesn't require a lot of talking? Can I work "behind the scenes?"

I do advertising and setting up customer accounts for a wellness company. I schedule people to get information on a presentation call but I do not have to do the presentation myself. This co. would be perfect for you because this co. has been enhancing people's lives and deals in safer, healthier, products and the environment for over 23 years. Being quiet isnt a disability if anything you should look for a job that involves talking. Then you will be able to talk more. go out and forget about fear. Low confidence can lead to being quiet so be sure of yourself and just get out there and talk!

I'm a PhD level epidemiologist, and I know a lot of MPH level epidemiologists and statisticians in health departments who don't spend a lot of time with the public, but of course they have to interact with colleagues. Health geographic Information systems (GIS) is an emerging area, and if you develop some skills in this area, you will be in demand. If you are more into laboratory work, there are jobs in environmental health and microbiology that might suit you.

I'm unfamiliar with a masters of dental public health, but I imagine it would be like the MPH, but more focused on dental policy. I'd get a MPH: its seems more generally applicable and more easily recognized.

I am a doctor from nigeria.... have worked for medecins sans frontieres in the past. Currently rounding up a masters in public health... which school is my best bet as to studying a PHD in Public health In Canada. Ontario ? please advice needed

They only give preference to aboriginal Canadians. All other people are on an equal footing. But do apply anyway.

Don't waste your money on a masters in public health. You need to be an MD to be a psychiatrist and that requires a BS in pre-med, about 4 years in medical school and then another 4 years studying to become a psychiatrist. Good luck!
