most one year MPH programs are offered only to students who are current undergraduates at that particular school. for example, since i go to cornell, i can apply to do a MPH through my school and start the requirements as a senior and therefore only stay another year. see if your current school has this or has one with a school nearby.

They might wish to work in health administration or health management.

2
Well you could certainly work in health administration, for a hospital, a medical insurer, or the county, state or federal government.

3
To go into health administation or the political arena

4
They can work in the health related field without taking all the hours in the sciences; they would just take business classes.

5
So that they will know about health for their safety

6
Doctors and nurses provide care to patients. Many people working in the healthcare industry do not actually provide care to the patients. There are people who work in all levels of management and administration. Think of it this way... is everyone working in the restaurant a chef?

7
To be an administrator of a public health department. They negotiate contracts and dole out the money to contracted agencies.

8
interest?

9
to be a family nurse practioner, a teacher, an administrator.

10
there are administration personnell, dietary personell, physical therapy, radiological technologists, radiological practitioners, coroners, health department officials, water company and sewage managmenet, medical research people, there are tons of things in public health that could require a masters, or people just earn them for job security and worth

11
there are many positions in medicine aside from doctor and nurse

12
so they might care for a loved one do to not having the money to spend or just because they love the family member so much they would not let any one else but themsleves do the job i lost my father a few years back and the kids was there nite and day and i can go to sleep at nite knowing i done every thing i could to care for him and that i will be blessed by god yes it was hard but i was trained when i worked in a nuresing home

13
They may want to become the Public Health officer of their city or state. They may be leaning towards a career in health management. They could also want to run a State Public Health Testing Laboratory or a State Public Health hospital like we have here at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts that handles communicable diseases and testing for the state and where some prison inmates are treated

14
They could go into health adminisration or be the director of a health management company. He could also work as the director of the health division at a community college or university.

My friend is a health educator in the city of Huntington Beach. They have programs to aid families of low income to get access to various healthcare and other things. She has a MA in public health.

What about a Masters in Health Administration

What about a Masters in Health Administration?
I am a college Junior with a 3.0 GPA (about), have decent GRE scores, and recomendations should be no problem. Another big factor is that when I get my bachelors degree I will be commisioned a medical service officer in the Army Reserve (essentially running Army hospitals). How are my chances for admission to either a MHA or Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Health Management? How competitive are the programs? I'm talking about public universities. Thanks.

You'll be fine. Public Health programs don't necessarily expect you to have a medical background, although you will increase your chances of acceptance if you get some experience volunteering or working in the medical field. I suggest that you volunteer at a hospital, homeless shelter, or Ronald McDonald House. Even an animal shelter is a great place to volunteer since a major area in health care right now involves the interaction between animal and human health and disease. In the MA program, you will take classes for like statistics, epidemiology, global health, research methods, etc, to give you a solid understanding of public health care. You can also advance further to get a doctorate in public health.

Unless you have another degree in health care with a degree in public health, it'll be very hard for you to find a job. There are very limited jobs in public health, and so, they are very selective.

2
As I'm sure you know, the most famous such school is the Harvard School of Public Health. They've got a lot of info on their web page, but here's a really good page from their Career Services office... http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/careers/guide-intro.html

3
There are so many jobs that you can get with a MPH in a variety of areas. Depending on what concentration you decide (epidemiology, health promotion/behavioral science, biostats, environmental, management/policy) there are differences in income after graduation. Biostatistics is probably the concentration the fewest people choose and therefore you can make a decent amount of money as a statistician following graduation. Epidemiology is also another good field. In epi, you can work for the goverment (CDC) or corporate companies. Health promotion and behavioral sciences focuses on prevention, intervention, and changing people's behaviors to promote health. Personally, in my research I've found that these HPBS jobs are a little lower paying when you only have an MPH. For the environmental concentration, you can work in health policy with the govt or other advocacy groups. In the management and administration concentration, you can work as a hospital administrator and work on how to make health systems run efficiently. In general, with a MPH, there are a lot of very different jobs. The way I went about researching possible jobs was to look at a job site (check link below). I think with an MPH, you need to remember that you're not in it for the money, but more for what you can do for other people. However, you can live and find a job, with an MPH. If you do decide to go for an MPH, make sure to pick a concentration that you will enjoy and are interested in. Good luck!

I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist. I have a MPH from USC (So Cal, not South Carolina). When I was studying public health, I chose to specialize in epidemiology and biostatistics. This is a specialty offered by most graduate programs in public health. I investigate disease outbreaks and run disease surveillance. My areas of research are parasites and enteric diseases. This involved a lot of statistics and interviewing people over the phone. In my office we also have health educators, medical epidemiologists (MDs who got additional eduction in public health) and public health nurses. My colleagues work in a variety of fields. Some do research at various universities. Some work in biotech. Some work in public health policy for local and federal government agencies. Some work for health care agencies like Kaiser Permanente. And others abandoned ship and do things unrelated to public health.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple of areas. One would be to work with your state's Food Bank network; besides distributing food to shelters and pantries, some Food Banks do work with other agencies to educate those living in poverty about health and proper nutrition. Food bank staff often conduct workshops, teach cooking classes, and sit on Hunger & Poverty task forces. A refugee center might be another area; in our community, the Episcopal Church runs a refugee center along with educational programs (including health and wellness issues). Additionally, The Salvation Army, Catholic and Episcopal churches run shelters, homes for unwed mothers, and transitional housing shelters; skilled administrators are often needed at these types of facilities. You could choose to become a paid lobbyist; and advocate for social change at a legislative level. I've recently become involved in advocacy and was rather surprised to learn about the whole lobbying process. You can always choose a day job in community health, and then volunteer your time and experience at charitable organizations that assist the poor. With the sort of educational background you would have, you'd be an incredible asset.

For the Doctors out there: Why get a Masters of Public Health if you are already a doctor

For the Doctors out there: Why get a Masters of Public Health if you are already a doctor?
I am a undergrad at a school with a pretty good pre-med program. I want to be a doctor, but I'm thinking of taking a year off before going to med school because, in the major that I am in, I only need an additional semester to get my masters in public health. Is it worth it? Why do so many doctors go back to school to get their MPH? What are the benefits other than gaining more knowledge of the health care system? Namely, what are the tangible benefits?
Medicine - 2 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

The MPH is simply a different qualification which acts as an entry pathway into other aspects of the healthcare system. Being a doctor teaches you about health and illness in terms of the body and its mechanics: an MPH focuses on entirely different aspects of health care. You can choose epidemiology, health economics, health policy, health administration and so on: these options can lead you into administration or government policy advisingt or similar jobs, which you aren't always qualified for as a doctor. Or, you can use your MPH to study things like primary health care, health care in resource poor settings, medical sociology/anthropology and so on, and these are likely to assist you if you want to do aid work, or work with culturally diverse communities, etc. The benefit of doing an mph may not immediately be financial, but you will have a far greater skills base than with only a medical degree.

2
It's a great question, and as a Med Student we had the opportunity to take an extra year or so to obtain the MPH. The tangible benefit of it comes into play if you'd like to engage in non-clinical practice, i.e. policy-making or some form of administration outside the realm of clinical medicine.

Hi! I saw your vote for the last answer, looked at your profile, and couldn't help myself to join the answers for this question :-P As for the things that you can do with an MPH, well, there are many :-) Since MPH is a professional-oriented degree in public health, your career choice will be rather broad, but will also depend on the sub-specialty of your choice. Usually, for entry-level jobs as a fresh graduate, you can become a program officer or a coordinator at a local or state public health agency. It will also be possible for you to work in academia as a researcher, helping to design questionnaires and perform statistical analysis. I'm doing an MS but I wish I had chosen an MPH in the first place cuz the MS thesis + publication requirement at my school just takes forever to complete (I'm overseas so it may be different in the States). Please keep in mind that if you want to apply for a Ph.D. and try for an academic career, it may be a bit (just a bit) easier to do so with an MSPH (Master of Science in Public Health) than an MPH. I wouldn't recommend an MSPH otherwise. If you're a US citizen, then there are plenty of opportunities at the CDC, the armed forces (if u major in Envi Health or Health Admin) and the US Public Health Service's Commission Corps as well.

In the US, it is hard to get a public health job without the masters degree. Undergrad public health is fine, but really, you should broaden your horizons and save the public health studies for graduate school. I studied molecular cell biology as an undergraduate. Then I earned my MPH in epidemiology and biostatistics. Perhaps you should consider some other biomedical field for udergrad? Microbiology is great if you want to do pulib health lab work (infectious diseases and so forth). Or maybe something in public policy so you can learn about legal and civic applications of public health.

Being quiet isnt a disability if anything you should look for a job that involves talking. Then you will be able to talk more. go out and forget about fear. Low confidence can lead to being quiet so be sure of yourself and just get out there and talk!

I'm a PhD level epidemiologist, and I know a lot of MPH level epidemiologists and statisticians in health departments who don't spend a lot of time with the public, but of course they have to interact with colleagues. Health geographic Information systems (GIS) is an emerging area, and if you develop some skills in this area, you will be in demand. If you are more into laboratory work, there are jobs in environmental health and microbiology that might suit you.

I think it depends on where you want to live and what kind of job you want to do. At my last job, there were a lot of people with MPHs. It was a contract research organization and most of our contracts were with the government. The positions held by MPH degree holders included data managers, protocol monitors, and project managers (clinical research associates). I'm not sure what the starting salary was, but I'm guessing maybe $50-55k a year. The thing is, many of the people with the masters degrees were doing the same exact work as somebody with a bachelor's degree. Supposedly if you already have a clinical degree (i.e., MD or BSN) you are much more marketable.

You can study darn close to ANYTHING and get into a public health masters program. I have a MPH in epi/biostats. Now I work as an infectious disease epidemiologist. It's a pretty nice gig. When I was in grad school, my colleagues were from a variety of fields. Some of their majors included: nursing, anthropology, psychology, sociology, statistics, English, history, and yes, there were a few biology majors like me in the mix. The joke is, epidemiologists are just a bunch of fallen pre-meds ;) When I was looking at public health programs, I was interested in a lot of things, too, mainly epi, infectious disease, adolescent health, and international health. When you check out a MPH program, make sure you look at the curricula they offer. In my case, infectious disease isn't offered at a lot of schools (it's a dying art), so I had to go with epi/biostat when choosing among the schools I got into. You can usually get the info off their website, but I highly encourage you to call the program director's office directly and talk with them. Tell them you're a prospective student. And visit the campuses if you can. I flew from California to DC to check out Georgetown and GWU because I got into GWU and was waitlisted at GU. I talked to as many faculty as I could. I wandered around the campuses of the school. I looked at the posters on the walls to get an idea of what kind of research they were doing.

I'm thinking about getting a Masters in Public Health, but...?
Specifically an MPH, but what would be the difference if I geared more towards Environmental Health more than Behavioral Health? (Any specifics, like differences in course work?) Also, what does a Masters on Health Administration entail (more business geared, I'm assuming)?

Order your perspective school's catalogue ... it should give a complete description of the majors. Every program is different so no one can really tell you how the course will be different, specifically except that one will be more focused on the environment and one on behavioral ... you have to read the course requirement descriptions to get a better idea for yourself.

2
This is a BROAD generalization, with many exceptions, of course... but it at least helps you get the gist of it... Those with an MHA are in hospital management. Those with an MPH are in health department managment (or are sworn officers). Within a health department... Those with a transcript which leans more toward environmental heath tend to be concerned with the cleanliness of restaurants, healthcare facilities, water systems, etc. Those with a transcript which leans more toward behavioral health tend to be concerned about things like disease outbreaks in public places, making sure everyone gets their flu shots, etc. Many (but certainly not all) who get an MHA are nurses (RNs). Those who get an MPH with a transcript leaning more toward behavioral health studies also tend to (but certainly need not necessarily) be nurses (RNs) as well. Those who get an MPH with a transcript leaning more toward environmental health are usually not nurses; and in many counties, these people are sworn health department officers... with badges and everything. That said, those on the behavioral health side can be officers with badges, too. It all just depends on how the county's health department is organized, and what the state's law prescribe. An MHA is, indeed, more business -- or, actually, more precisely, more management and administration -- oriented. Think of it as something at least akin (though not precisely the same as) an MBA, only specifically geared toward managing a healthcare entity rather than a business entity. I say that an MHA cannot be precisely thought of that way only because there are actually MBA programs out there which are specifically for people running the purely business aspects of healthcare entities. A person with an MHA will know a little about that area, and a little about the healthcare side of things, too. There's also, FYI, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, which may be thought of as the rough equivalent of an MBA, except specifically geared toward the management of government rather than business. I mention the MPA only because I've just mentioned the MBA, and I just wanted to make it clear that there's a government equivalent of the MBA out there (since we are, after all, talking about both the private and public sectors herein). It's uncommon for someone with an MPA to be in the private sector doing what an MBA normally does; however it is VERY common for someone with an MBA to be working in government (the public sector). I explained it this way, rather than going into specific courses, because my recommendation for how to decide which degree (MHA or MPH) to get should be based on what kind of career you want, not based on the courses you must take to get there. Plus, it's very easy to find any ol' MPH and MHA degree programs on the Internet, download the appropriate college catalog for them (usually as a PDF file), and just look at the courses in the major for each. Hope that helps!

In Florida we have a fellowship called Florida EIS. Maybe your state health department offers something similar. See link: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/disease_ctrl/epi/FLEIS/Program_summary.htm

2
Check with your state's Dept. of Health to find out what the requirements are.

What master's program to go for? Either public health, family and consumer sciences, or environmental ed

What master's program to go for? Either public health, family and consumer sciences, or environmental ed.?
I am interested in the environment, education, nutrition, health, and consumer. I cannot do all of the programs because it is a lot of money and time that will be invested and I really do not have the money.

Probably public health is the most likely for your ability to accomplish something and also for steady employment.

2
My sister went for a MPh and I was surprised at how much math she had to do (epidemiology apparently requires calculus, statistics) so if you are considering public health, keep that in mind. It would seem that you might be able to combine environment, education and consumer in environmental ed. That's 3 of your 5 interests. Whatever you decide, good luck! All three are worthy endeavors.

Im going into a undergraduate Physician Assistant program and I was also thinking about getting a MPH. PAs, nurses and MDs make moree money than a MPH person because they need to know a lot of information and are highly compensated. Personally I think you should first get into the Health Care by getting a more fulfilling job such as being a PA or a nurse. You get a lot of money and still help people, the best two reasons for doing anything! A person with a MPH will not get much money without first being in the health field and proving yourself worthy to take on higher responsibilities, such as medical director or in charge of a hospital. Get a more useful degree such as PA, nursing, or one of the sciences and then get the MPH. Don't get it alone you'll be struggling with getting jobs and money! Good luck!

Online degree - Master's (public health) vs MBA? Graduate from top college vs not so good graduate school

Online degree - Master's (public health) vs MBA? Graduate from top college vs not so good graduate school?
(1) I intend to stay in the healthcare finance industry. Which graduate degree will be more beneficial for my career development (and possibly higher income) -- getting a master's (in public health) or MBA? (2) For my undergrad degree, I graduated from a top national college. There are more nationally reputable online master's programs than online MBA programs. Is it better to have the "name" than the type of graduate degree (MBA vs MPH)?

The MBA gives you the biggest bang for the buck. In other words, you get the most money back for every dollar you spend on a MBA. So, a MBA is more valuable that a regular Master's degree. If you're going to get a MBA, you should definitely go to a top college. As far as online degrees go, a lot of employers do not respect them. I would stay away from online universities - unless it was backed by a top university (e.g. - NYU Online, UPenn Wharton Online courses, etc.)

Average pay for all Physician Assistants (no s at the end of Physician) is about $78,000 nationwide. Pay varies by specialty and location of practice. An MPH or any other Master's degree really does mean much as far as salary, in the beginning. It does make you more marketable which may lead to getting a job easier. You have to understand that no matter what letters come after the PA-C, you are still a brand new grad and have a lot to learn. Later on, the Master's might help...a little.

Is getting a Masters in public health gonna help me get into medical school?
If not, what kind of jobs can I expect to find with a MPH? I'm looking at this as a backup, in case I don't get into Medical school..

No because the MPH is directed towards those that want to be administrators of a large clinic or a hospital.

The question is, do you want to work in public health administration, or do you want to become a doctor? It is definitely possible to get your master's in public health then choose attend medical school. Many people who didn't do as well during their undergraduate years decide to get Master's degrees and then apply to medical school as a mechanism of raising their application GPA. However, if you do not need the boost, you are adding years to an already long road if you choose to do so. Many medical schools offer joint Masters/MD, or PhD/MD programs. It just depends on what you want your career to be. I recommend looking into some of these programs.
