Master of Public Health In England of Australia

Master of Public Health In England of Australia?
Hello, I got into King's College University in London, England (starts in Sept) and also got into Melbourne University in Australia (starts in Feb 2011). I'm having a really hard time deciding where I should go. I am really torn b/c i really like warm weather, but I've always wanted to live in London. But London is so expensive compared to Australia. However, London is closer to home, but I know more people in Melbourne! I know I should probably also be focusing on the curriculum in each school. Both are good. I need advice and help. Please give my your feedback and reasoning why I should go to either school. I would really appreciate it.

Public Health? Knowing what the public needs to maximize protection against or dealing with a health crisis. Public policy? Knowing how to manipulate the "system" and ignoring public health needs while looking like your actually fulfilling those needs.

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) program prepares leaders who can effectively respond to the dynamic and ever-changing health care industry. These individuals have a capacity to critically examine and evaluate issues and trends and are empowered to influence the destiny of the global health care system. Curriculum is tailored to the needs of the health care leader/manager by providing content in finance, policy, research, technology, quality improvement, economics, marketing and strategic planning. In addition, students have the option to complete a specialization related to their area of interest. Specialization options include gerontology, informatics and education. Graduates of the MHA program will have enhanced their management/administrative background and specialty area through the completion of a curriculum that provides students with the latest theories and contemporary practice applications. Graduates are able to define their role within the health care system and understand how to make necessary changes to create a work environment, which is team oriented and motivating to others. The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) and the Doctor of Public Health (Dr.PH.) are multi-disciplinary professional degrees awarded for studies in areas related to public health. The MPH degree focuses on public health practice, as opposed to research or teaching. Master of Public Health programs are available throughout the world in Medical Schools, Schools of Public Health, and Schools of Public Affairs. The traditional MPH degree is designed to expose candidates to six core areas of public health: Biostatistics Epidemiology Health services administration Health education Behavioral science and Environmental science In addition to these core areas, MPH degrees may also intersect with fields such as urban planning, policy, advocacy, community organizing, communications, integrated health, social work and social sustainability. In some countries the MPH program is only available for medical graduates (MBBS or equivalent), those without the medical degree can join the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) program. The MSPH degree is an academic public health degree rather than a professional public health degree. The MSPH is more research-oriented than is the MPH. Required MSPH coursework includes most of the same classes needed for the MPH degree, but in addition the MSPH degree requires additional coursework in research methods, epidemiology, biostatistics, and similar public health studies. Also, MSPH students must complete a research thesis. The extra coursework roughly requires an additional year of study in relation to what is required for the MPH degree. The DrPH degree is for those who intend to pursue or advance a professional practice career in public health and for leaders and future leaders in public health practice. They face the particular challenge of understanding and adapting scientific knowledge in order to achieve health gain and results. This degree leads to a career in high-level administration, teaching, or practice, where advanced analytical and conceptual capabilities are required. The usual requirement for entry into this program is a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH). The DrPH program develops in its candidates all competencies included in MPH programs, with increased emphasis on high level skills in problem-solving and the application of public health concepts.

Public Health is a great field to get into today. Considering how globalized health care is becoming, its going to be really important in the future. I am graduating this may with a degree in Biology and plan to get a masters in Public Health before going to Medical School. I was looking into the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina. People who graduate from this program go on to do all sorts of things. Below are links to websites for the schools of Public Health at UNC and East Carolina University. Both give an idea of what someone with this degree might do. People often pursue Nursing, Medicine, various PhD programs, Pharmacy, even Law and other non-health fields. You can really do a lot after getting a masters degree in Public Health. As far as employment is concerned, you can work with the state health department, take part in community health planning and disease investigation. You could persue some counseling. You can work with government organizations and NGOs abroad. Look at the second link, it has a list much larger than the few i've mentioned here. Think about it though, make sure this is something you want to do. You don't want to get into a degree program and realize you don't like it. Still, there are a number of things you can do with a degree like this. If you are planning on working with the state department or any health field that involves people, this would be a great thing to pursue.

I would think that an MPA would be better suited for public sector jobs and that most MPH jobs are public sector. If you're going to invest in another degree - you might want to consider a doctorate in something. As for the value of an MBA - you'll be amazed at the cool stuff you'll learn. Just in terms of value managing your own affairs it will pay back well. The job options it opens (depending on your work experience) are incredibly varied. An MS in Stats is pretty valuable these days too - if your Public Health area/background is stats oriented you might prefer that route.

3
An MBA is not "necessary," however it is definitely a plus. I work at a medical school, and our President has an MBA and MD. There are several higher ups with MBAs, such as the Center Director at my program's Federal Funding Agency, as well as many in administration and faculty at the medical school. Also, I have a friend who has an MBA and a PharmD and she works for the federal government. So it is definitely useful and I think it is starting to become the trend in the public health field. As far as being a good investment is concerned, MBAs are expensive. Personally, I would go for an MBA at a good public school if it is an "extra" degree.

4
It is a good idea... But better to go for hospital management or MBA in health care.... http://www.studyfreak.com

5
Sure if you can afford to get both degrees. The MBA is suitable for a public health career. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. If your undergraduate degree is in public health, you may consider getting directly into an MBa program. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, etc), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.

Not as much as a Master of Health Administration will. The MPH is more about studying disease and disease prevention.

I have a MPH from USC, and I will concur with Coach T. Most of us in public health think hospital administration is Satan's work. We are more focused on things like health education, epidemiology and trials research. I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist, and personally, I'd rather chew glass than work in administration. Props to you for wanting to do it, 'cause someone has to... On the bright side, you can actually do a double masters in MPH/MHA at many schools.

Have you discussed this with your classmates? Typical residencies involve an extreme number of hours on the job each week, and very little rest time. It is so rigorous that I seriously doubt you would have any time to attend classes, and certainly no time or energy to study. Finish your pediatric residency first, and then apply for a masters program in public health if you still feel the need. Check out this link, which I got by going to www.petersons.com then asking for a graduate school with a masters program in public health in New York: http://www.petersons.com/GradChannel/code/AcdSearchResults.asp?sponsor=1 I did a google search for "pediatric residency program new york" with the following results: http://www.stbarnabashospital.org/PME/PedsResidency.htm http://www.nycornell.org/pediatrics/residencies.html http://www.nymc.edu/GME/residencies.asp http://www.med.nyu.edu/pediatrics/residency/p://www.downstate.edu/peds/pedresidencyprogram.html Here's a site that actually ranks all the available programs: http://www.residentphysician.com/Pediatrics_rankings.htm Hope it all works out for you.

I have a MPH and I specialize in epidemiology, although I chose to my thesis on STD health education. I work for a large regional health department (one of the largest in the US) as an epidemiologist. There are a lot of jobs in epidemiology, and as far as public health specialties go, it pays better than most (health ed, though fun, pays squat!). If you want a job in public health, you should look for jobs in government agencies, medical research groups (including industry and academia), or community based organizations. I think if you're not totally familiar with the field, it can be difficult to recognize what job opportunities do exist. I assure you, there are plenty. Anyway, as for my thoughts on having an MPH, I only did this to buy time before going to medical school. I don't want to be an epidemiologist forever. Still, the work is interesting and rewarding. I get paid okay. But if you ever wanted to be rich, this isn't the way to do it.

A graduate degree in a specialized field will give you an edge over your competitors whether it̢۪s a new position or a promotion you are looking for. A master̢۪s in public health will make you more competent for a variety of complex roles in community health, health education, healthcare administration, etc. besides fetching you a bigger pay cheque. Take a look at the Master of Public Health program offered by Independence University. The university offers this degree at distance and online. Also, Independence University has been accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

You can get a list of Health Services Administration jobs in the government at the source below, just use the search job tab. You can get a list of student or intern positions at jobsearch.studentjobs.gov site (see sources) To search an entire occupation group enter only the first two digits ( try 06) Salaries in the $87K or higher are mostly GS-13 equivalent or higher. These are usually promotions for people who have at least one year specialized experience or equivalent at the next lower GS level. Your best bet if your in college or fresh out of college is to come into the federal government through a intern program. If your position is in a critical field you can often get signing bonuses which you keep if you stand for a designated period and you spend your first years in training learning how to do your job. Some of the training may seem like BS and there a lot of government regulations which you will need to be aware which is covered in the training period. Usually after the internship, you entitled to non-competitive promotion. A Master degree or PhD can often offset the experience requirements and usually gets you started two to four level higher than if you come into the government with a BS. There are several factor you need to consider. If you consider the time you may spend getting your Master or Phd, and the fact that often the government provide training and educational opportunities to its employees and may even give you time off to attend school, the question may be not if you get a masters but do you get before or after you become a government employee. You really do have to manage your career and be willing to relocation if you want to move up in the government.

You have a good shot. Get the information on the graduate program for Public Health, and see if you can fulfill the admission requirements. If you see some requirement that you think you cannot fulfill, do not give up ! Phone the deans office for the program for Public Health, and ask to speak to someone about the admission requirements and your qualifications. If you want this, push for it. Part of being in a responsible position, is knowing when to push and when to be flexible. I suggest you compose a letter, writing why you want to do this and what your plans and goals are. Once you have it written down, read it over a few times and rehearse it. Then if you do meet with the dean regarding admission, you will have yourself prepared to make your case. I wish you success in your worthy endeavor.

2
Oh my gosh, are you kidding me? You have a science background! They will accept students with degrees in other fields, but they secretly love the science people. What they look for is a mix of skills, and it will depend on your field as far as what you concentrate on in grad school. You will learn about policy and admin, but the cool thing about grad school is that you'll meet (and be able to learn with and from) students with different backgrounds and strengths. Best of luck! If you haven't the GRE yet, good luck with that too!

You will need to become a registered nurse first (RN). If you want to work in public health for a governmental agency you will need a bachelors in nursing (BSN). Most universities offer an accelerated program for students who have a bachelor's in another field. You may also want to consider becoming an advanced practice nurse which requires a Masters (MSN). The university I attend has a dual major in public health and nursing you may want to look at to give you some ideas. It depends on the institution... different ones have different standards which should be listed on their webpages.

2
That depends on the university you apply to. I went on a fulbright. My advice to you is to look at the admissions requirements of at least three universities you wish to apply for, to get a ball park figure. Plus, when I applied, the embassy officials did ask my opinion as to where I wanted to go, and they expected me to have made some decisions. My choices were Ohio University, the Univerisity of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke. I got admitted into OU, Pitt and Duke. Mind you, GRE scores are important, but they are not the deal closer. Universities will look at your application documents, and will focus a lot on your career goals. Just be very clear about what you want and why. I wish I could tell you what my score was, but I can't remember. I think it was in the 800 range for the combined, which apparently was enough to get me in. Good luck.

Contact the program coordinator to find out their requirements. Since none of us know what program we can't answer your question.

2
If the program is asking for experience, it would be best to check with them about what they expect. If you have ideas, you can also check to see if those ideas meet their criteria, and you can ask for examples of what successful candidates have done in the past. Be specific about what you do - if you volunteer at a hospital, make sure it has relevance. Visiting with patients is great, but hardly MPH level. Discussing prescriptions and drug interactions would be much more relevant.

You would be at a great disadvantage trying to make a public health career with an online education. Stay away from the expensive for-profit proprietary schools which advertise heavily and offer a substandard education.

2
Many "land-attached" colleges have satellite/distance courses that are available online and where you won't have to physically go to lectures. Have you contact the universities in your area to see if they have these options?

I'd suggest Imperial College: http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/about/divisions/ephpc/postgrad/taughtcourses/mph2/ or the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine: http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/prospectus/masters/ The primary accrediting organisation would be the Royal Institute of Public Health: http://www.riph.org.uk/index5.html

What salary would I have with a bachelors in economics and masters in public health

What salary would I have with a bachelors in economics and masters in public health?
I could be a health economist,no?And I'd be making a good 80,000 or 90,000 a year correct? The money doesn't really matter to me but I just want proper info.Thank you all for your answers in advance.

You will make whatever people are willing to pay you. I can tell you that it is highly unlikely you will be paid $80,000 a year though. If you really want to become an economist, you need to find an internship in economics. If you can't make that work, get an internship with a financial company in which you analyze data. If you can't do that, then get ANY internship or ANY job. You will need to work your way up to a position that pays $80,000. It may take 5 years, it may take 10. $80,000 is a very good job. You will be expected to have experience as an economist, maybe a certification, knowledge of computer software programs, and to have excellent communication skills both verbal and written, analytical skills, and problem solving skills. Final recommendation: Keep your eyes open for any job that will allow you to use your skills. Don't let opportunities pass you by, because you want to be a health economist. It is a very specialized field that is EXTREMELY rare. Here is a job that is in Maryland. It seems they require a Phd for work that is this complicated. http://www.careerbuilder.com/JobSeeker/Jobs/JobDetails.aspx?IPath=QHKCV0D&ff=21&APath=2.21.0.0.0&job_did=J3I03H6HBGVQX20W7P1 You should search Careerbuilder, Indeed, Monster, etc. for positions in your area to get a better idea of what they will require of you. If the masters in public health is a research degree, you might want to try to be a researcher somewhere. Whatever you do, don't quit your day job. Good Luck!

master of Public Health, accredtied schools

master of Public Health, accredtied schools?
Hi, I'm a college student who's interested in MPH (master of public health) program. I woner why some good school swith MPH program are not on the US NEWS rank. For instance, UC Sandiego, USC, UC Irvine, UC Davis.. those 4 schools are not affiliated to some blah blah organization and not on the US NEWS public health rank. (I really wanna go california for grad school) But there are schools like Loma Linda, San Diego State Univ that are not very famous. What should I choose? Is it really important to get to a affiliated or accredited schools?

Don't get too caught up with USnews rankings. Go where it's accredited and where you are happy. San Diego State also offers a joint PhD with UC San Diego in Public Health - Epidemiology emphasis. Good luck!

I'm quite sure that U of T's MPA program is pretty top notch. I'm not sure what it's entrance standards are like, but U of T has excellent resources when it comes to studying health care, whether it's administration or practical - so look into it.

I have just applied to the University of Waterloo to do my Masters of Public Health. They actually offer it as a distance education program so you can do it full-time or part-time from home...which is great (don't know how I could offered it if I couldn't keep my job). I have heard some really great things about this program and Waterloo has a great reputation. Their deadline for 08-09 has passed but if your're considering it the next deadline will be Feb 09. For more info go to: http://www.ahs.uwaterloo.ca/hsg/mph/index.html Good luck!

Should I go to nursing school or get a master's in public health

Should I go to nursing school or get a master's in public health?
I'm a psychology major, business minor in college, and I'll be graduating in a year. I am really interested in health care, specifically public health. Most of the graduate public health programs I've looked at prefer people with experience in the healthcare field already (nurses, doctors, allied health people). I could go into nursing... but I'm kind of hesitant, because I know that being just a regular hospital floor nurse definitley isn't what I want to do and I'm afraid of getting stuck doing that kind of work. So I guess right now, I'm torn on whether I should just pursue a master's degree in public health anyway, or get a second bachelor's degree in nursing, and become a public health nurse (and then maybe get an MPH in the future)? Which is the best route?

You could always try being a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) for a year or two. A lot of hospitals and univesities will hire peole with BA/BS degrees to work with patients for studies. Usually you do a lot of patient recruitment, schedule appointments, store and organize data, and sometimes they get to administer tests. Psychology is a good major for that. I'd advise that you try to gain some experience in a clinical or experimental lab. After working as a CRA for a year or two, you could then apply to MPH programs. You could also try applying and seeing what happens, but some hands-on experience is recommended.

Master of Science in Public Health vs Master of Public Health (MPH)

Master of Science in Public Health vs Master of Public Health (MPH)
I am currently an undergrad, getting my degree in Public Health with a Health Promotion specialization. I have been looking at graduate schools and I cannot choose between a Master of Science in Public Health or the simple Master of Public Health (MPH) Some schools I have been looking at only allow MPH studies to be for doctors and health professionals, while others allow anyone to join their program...But what is the difference between the Masters of Science and the MPH? And what kind of jobs would you find yourself in after graduating? Thanks :) Don't know if anything additional may be useful - I am more interested in a professional career in public health than research/academia (though maybe someday I would like to do some research projects in my career)

MSPH and MPH are nearly equivalent, but don't expect the MSPH program to include majors like community health, health education, health communication or health policy. A MSPH program will likely include various branches of epidemiology and biostatistics, and maybe environmental health. Since you said you want to actually *PRACTICE* public health, the MPH might be a better fit for you. It's broader and interdisciplinary. My MPH is in epidemiology/biostatistics. I am an infectious disease epidemiologist, and I do research at the local health department. I had to study health behavior, health policy and other non-science topics in public health in addition to all the epidemiology stuff I did. My friends who were in other public health majors are working in various fields such as health administration, consulting, health education, news writing, nutrition and fitness, and statistics.

Earning an master's degree in Public Health is a great way to open new doors in the field of health care and health care administration. As the baby boomers generation ages and as the world faces new challenges from infectious diseases, you can be on the front line helping doctors, governments, non-profit organizations, and businesses to provide much-needed assistance, advice, and medical care.

2
An MPH is the working degree in the field of public health, meaning most employers will not require a higher degree. Often MPH's, especially those with behavioral (nutrition) and/or environmental focus, work for the county or state Department of Health or a non-profit org. All MPH programs accredited by the ASPH (Associaiton for Schools of Public Health, there are about 40 accredited schools now) will require you to complete one or more internships, during which you will be able to get more of a feel for which subject area you like and the kind of job you want. You may become a program coordinator or a community educator or an evaluation specialist - sometimes you will be behind a desk, other times you will be delivering a nutrition program or collecting water samples. I have an MPH and found a grant writing position which I like very much.

Most master's programs don't provide room and board, so you would want to go to a rural (or smaller town), public university somewhere, where the housing tends to be much cheaper. I can find one at Eastern Kentucky University and at Kansas State University which might be relatively inexpensive, but there is no list by cost that I can provide. However, I have to caution you. Are you sure you want the cheapest program, or do you just want the cheapest of the good programs? Usually you get what you pay for, to some degree, and a little money wasted on a bad program is worse than a fair amount of money invested in an outstanding one.

Great question. Unfortunately, there are many answers. If you have a bachelor's degree in health already, you can get to higher positions in your field. Why is that? Depending on the university program, you will take specialized courses in a particular field of choice (epidemiology, health administration, environmental health, health promotion) that will help you do your job better. With more knowledge comes more ability. If you aren't in the field, you can use the degree as a way into the field. The very highest levels of the profession require a PhD or a DPH (Doctorate in Public Health). Those jobs would be a head of a large public health department, or faculty in a university. An MPH is good enough to do a lot of jobs that wouldn't be open to you otherwise (staff epidemiologist, program manager with a non-profit, hospital administration, research analyst, consultant, and more) Your job options open up quite a bit with a masters degree as well. If you are considering a position in the field, I would consult the public health department at your closest university for more ideas.

lunarob is a dirty tampon string. I have a MPH degree. I'm am epidemiologist. I like my job and I get paid okay (public health is not a money-making profession). My classmates have gotten jobs with non-profits, state and local health agencies, law enforcement, hospitals and research institutes. If you study epi/biostat, you are marketable to pharmaceutical companies. They pay the best. You can run clinical trials and analyze data. I didn't wanna go into biotech. I wanted to do outbreak investigation, so I took a job with my local health dept. Bioterrorism is the hot topic right now. I have a friend who specilizes in BT and he's training to become Jack Bauer. Pretty cool job.

Many people will say that Touro College is not a good school. I went to Touro for my M.S. and I enjoyed the teachers very much. I had a good experience. But I did my research first. Be sure you know what you are looking for. Also if you do decide on Touro, make sure to ask around about the professors. Ask students (never the staff) which teachers are good to take courses with and which to pass over. That way you ensure yourself of at least a good school experience.

Master of Public Health or Master of Science

Master of Public Health or Master of Science?
I was considering to become a registered Dietitian (RD) . I was told to have a Master of Science degree and then complete the Didactic Program for Dietetics (DPD). However, I am also interested in Master of Public Health. Is it a requirement that to get into the DPD program, one has to have a MS degree? Or can it also be with a MPH degree? Also, what is better: MPH or RD with an MS? What kind of jobs does each do? I am uncertain in what direction I should head toward. If anyone who is in one of the mentioned fields or knows about them, please let me know. Appreciate it! Thanks a lot.

Which is the most respected/rigorous Int'l Health Master of Public Health: Tulane, Emory or Minnesota

Which is the most respected/rigorous Int'l Health Master of Public Health: Tulane, Emory or Minnesota?
I've been accepted to Tulane & Emory (Int'l health MPH) and Minnesota (Nutrition MPH with global concentration). I need to decide which to attend, and soon. The city doesn't matter too much to me--I'll be too busy to do much and I can find things I like anywhere. I already did undergrad at Tulane and even though it's post-Katrina NOLA, that's ok. I figure I'll be pretty absorbed in study. What I can't find out is which of these schools is the most respected in the International Health arena. I plan to work internationally and wonder if it matters. If anyone went to these schools, can you give me a run-down of the pros and cons? It's difficult to get a straight answer from some of the university student groups. Also, though it's not too important, if anyone knows the U.S. News & WR grad school rankings of these schools, I'd appreciate knowing! Thanks for your help!

What can I do with a Master's in HPER ? Is it similar to a Master's public health

What can I do with a Master's in HPER ? Is it similar to a Master's public health?
What can I do with a Master's in HPER ? Is it similar to a Master's public health? HPER stands for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. I was just wondering, because there isn't any Master's program in public health close in the area that I live. The only option is a master's HPER. So I'm just trying to decide if I should move to a different area where they offer M.S in public health or not.
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

No, that HPER program isn't going to cover all the stuff you will learn in a master's level public health program. MPH (yes, public health has its own masters title -- it is an interdisciplinary subject) programs include biostats, epidemiology and infectious diseases on top of the health education and programs/policy curriculum you would get in HPER. What do YOU want to do in public health? If you wanted to work with community groups and schools in chronic disease prevention, the HPER might be a better option. But if you wanted to look at infectious disease, disease surveillance, environmental health or policy making, a MPH might be worth the move.
